Intellect is Not God

We should take care not to make the intellect our God.

~ Albert Einstein

His greatest fear was that his inventions would be used to destroy mankind. He is often misquoted as being an atheist. He was not; he merely stated that what could not be proved could not be disproved….as related to believing in any God’s existence.

One mistake I made, was to think an advanced education and self knowledge would make me happier and free me of life’s pain. The reality is that education has given me more sense of self worth, more earning power, and it helped free me from single parent poverty for awhile. There is no harm in being educated. However, it is not the solution to happiness, security, or perfection. It is not God. Those things only come from my belief in something greater than myself.

Today’s Life Action Plan: Just for today, I will write a want ad for a higher power that describes any attributes that I can believe in. Now, I will hire Him or Her. 🙂

Humor as Prayer

Humor is a prelude to faith; and laughter is the beginning of prayer.

~ Reinhold Niebuhr

If we don’t laugh, we shall surely cry…at least that is something I heard that rings true for me, when dealing with major loss. At my father’s funeral, we sat around and told his old jokes, life stories, and fishing tales for 3 hours…it was part of the grieving process…It may sound outrageous to some of you. That is ok. It helped us not despair, but to remember his finer hours. I say one good belly laugh per day….keeps me sane and healthy. Laughter releases the bodies natural endorphins (feel good hormones)…great as an anti-depressant.

Today’s Life Coach Action Plan: Just for today, I will watch a comedy, read the cartoons, or watch cartoons on t.v…..I will laugh for Pete’s sake. I will have one laugh each day.

Enemy of Truth

The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie deliberate, contrived, and dishonest; but the myth persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

~ John F. Kennedy

We are all told “lies” or myths from early childhood. Women, were you told that you were too fat, too loud, and too forward? And men, were you told that you were too emotional, too tender hearted, and too weak? We are either too much or not enough in this society. These are myths. They must be busted, for us to live freely.

Today’s Life Coach Action Plan: Just for today, I will list my myths. I will list any ‘too much’ or ‘not enough’ messages that I have heard said about myself. Now, for each one, I will write the truth…starting with the words “I am absolutely…” Own your innate goodness.

The Gift

There is no such thing as a problem without a gift for you in its hands.

~ Richard Bach

We tend to look at problems as obstacles to being happy and living fully. Things to over come. Things to bear. things to tolerate. Things to get over with. When in reality, probelms are the richness of lfe, the opportunities to test our meddle, and a chance to find out how truly great we are.

Today’s Life Coach Action Plan: Just for today, I will list 3 problems that are causing me the greatest pain today….it could be a relationship, a person, a physical or mental issue, debt, etc….now, I will write on 10 index cards “willingness to willing”. I will tack these cards throughout my environments. This is a prayer…in a short while I will be led to deal with one of these issues at a time. Ask yoruself: what is this problem teaching me?

Having Hope

Strong hope is a much greater stimulant of life than any single realized joy could be.

~ Friederich Nietzsche

To begin each year in the hopes that we will be happier, richer, or more secure is very human indeed. However, a saner approach might be to reflect on the gifts that were granted to us throughout last year.  Each year, I try to write a list of gratitudes. Instead of focusing on the things yet given or acheived, which frustrates me and causes me to beat myself up; I prefer to look at things in terms of how much I have grown and learned. Let’s get our new year &/or life started on a upbeat note.

Today’s Life Coach Action Plan: Just for today, I will make a list of everything and every person that has come into my life this year…all the successes, gifts, and things learned. Breathe in the good.

Honesty

Being completely honest with oneself is a good exercise.

~ Sigmund Freud

What is this thing called honesty? I think a person must first be honest with who he/she is before being honest about how change can come about, what their intentions are for others, and also before they can be honest with others. One way in which I measure my honesty is to look myself in the mirror each a.m. and ask mself: where was I, who was I with, what did I say, and what did I do???  If I can proudly look myself right in the eye with the answers, then I feel I led a good life the day before… and it is likely that the present day will get off to a good start. I was honest.

Today’s Life Coach Action Plan: Just for today, I will look myself in the eye in the mirror in the morning.. I will ask myself the same questions. Practice self honesty.

Sacrificing Health

The greatest mistake a man can make is to sacrifice health for any other advantage.

~ Arthur Schopenhauer

I made this mistake myself. I understand. I thought for a long time, that as long as I was successful in my career, I would always be rewarded with riches, fame, security, and self-worth. I didn’t see anything else around me (family, friends, play activities, or hobbies). I was too busy with important things (work). I had to be the best, the brightest, the fastest, and the smartest. In my youth, these were needed and rewarded. They were survival mechanisms. As an adult, I worked myself into a frenzy and burned out early. It no longer works for me today.

Today’s Life Coach Action Plan: Just for today, what can I let go of today that is causing me pain and ill health? Let go…just one day.
